I'm using Facebook and Instagram less and trying to spend more time on Substack, though I only have 83 subscribers here. I do prefer Substack as there are more quality posts.

Thanks Nikki - now you have one more on here. 🙃

Really interesting piece. The only social media I have ever used is Substack, so it is interesting to hear what the others are like. I understand your mixed feelings. When I used to work in an office I often felt as though I had come into a group conversation without having the background to it, because everyone else was on Facebook. I do feel that a lot of socialising 'energy' has gone into these platforms now, which is not good for real-life encounters. On the other hand I have found Substack immensely enriching, and met some lovely people here with similar interests to me. It's a conundrum. Thanks, this was very informative.

Thanks Jules! I was very much in two minds about posting that piece so I'm very glad it was useful for you. I couldn't agree more with you about Substack - it's so interesting that you get to know new people here that you'll likely never meet in real life, but to whom you can really relate. That was never the case for me on Facebook.

Much nodding along reading this, Jacqui - what a lovely reminder of your time at The Clothes Show exhibition. As for social media, I wish I had your strength. Substack seems to have taken over my life lately, which at least means I spend less time on Facebook and Instagram. It’s tricky when you emigrate - you feel like you’ll miss out if you’re not on them. But in reality, I seem to see less of my friends and their actual lives, and far more irrelevant ads and random group suggestions.

I loved The Clothes Show so much. It definitely inspired me when it came to designing and making my first wedding dress. And I'm with you on Substack, at least spending time on here feels more positive - most of the time!

I’m the same. I deactivate facebook then reactivate it a week later. I actually tried to delete it the other day but couldn’t find the button and so gave up. I don’t like when memories come up on my phone and I cringe. I’m definitely getting rid of it very soon. This post has given me a little push. Thanks 🙏🏼

So happy to help. Google can find you the button. I didn't say it in the post but read or listen to Careless People. I was mortified. The example I gave was nothing in comparison to what they allow to happen on their platform. Though now as you said today we have ‘him who shalt not be named’ here! Equally horrific.

I’ve actually just DELETED IT!! 🎉🎉 I’m ashamed to say I had posted 4.1k pics 😳😳 that what they told me!!! Nuts!!!! I did it mainly to get rid of all my kids pics I posted over the years. Neither of my kids will ever let me posts pics of them now !! So I want to respect that. I’ll have a look at careless people.

Good for you BIG time! I didn't even look at my stats before I closed it. I had Careless People for a while before i listened to it. She's a New Zealander. And she was blocked from promoting the book by good old Facebook. 🙄 If even 10% of what she says is true its horrific.

Totally agree, I have come off all social media now except LinkedIn for work, it's wonderful. Although Substack can be just as addictive!

So glad that I'm not alone Cooky! It was interesting to see some of the reactions I got from people I was connected to on Facebook when I left - most won't have even noticed, but a few were definitely unexpected in their negativity. I hope that leaving helps me clear my head - it feels as if my brain has turned to mush lately. And agree on Substack - I convince myself that I'm consciously choosing to read more worthwhile content, instead of doom scrolling rubbish! Probably deluding myself ... :o)
